The Horse Handler will be in charge of the grooming and care of the therapeutic horses on the Madison Youth Ranch campus. This individual will also assist in equine therapy services with our therapeutic staff, and will help to teach our youth about proper horse handling.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two plus years experience in horse handling preferred; or any combination of training, education and experience which would provide the required knowledge, abilities and skills to successfully perform in this role.
Previous experience in equine therapy services, preferred.
Ability to build positive relationships with other staff and youth, required.
Ability to teach youth basic horsemanship skills, required.
Ability to provide a safe and therapeutic environment, required.
Ability to train and support horses in interactions with our youth, required.
Ability to maintain sensitivity to our target populations cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Manage regular grooming of horses and facilitate basic care of horses.
Teach horsemanship classes with our youth.
Teach our youth to care for and respect our horses in all interactions.
Assist/coach individual and group equine therapy sessions in partnership with our therapy staff.
Manage all equipment for the horses and equine therapy.
Work with the Facility Supervisor to coordinate the needs of the horses and their respective areas.
Assist in the maintenance of all horse areas, as needed.
Perform all other job duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
Employment Requirements
Valid driver license with a clean driving record, required.
Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent, required.
Ability to read, write and speak proficiently in English, required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Travel
This position does not travel.
Schedule
This position works a varied schedule of up to twenty-five hours per week. Schedule may be subject to change at any time, with or without notice. Other policies concerning this position are set forth in the current policies and procedures manual.
